I think a lot of it has to do with the idea that Christianity = the West, and everything else (specifically Islam in this case) = not the West. I used to try and be more charitable, before I became a Muslim; then I really became sensitive to the fact that many Christians and even non-Christians who have this very secularized Christian background have this very us-and-them characterization - that ignores that Islam is part of both America and Europe's religious and cultural fabric, not JUST something that "those immigrants" are imposing on "us." Arabs make up about 18% of Muslims, and yet "those Arabs" trying to impose "their way of life" is what is characterized as the problem. A lot of it is about xenophobia, and unfortunately I think many people just ignore whether it is, in a Christian sense, a just war, because those irrational fears take the forefront, even though there are religious undertones.

Mwana,

Yes, I do think that a lack of basic knowledge about farming and growing food has definitely created an environment for misinformation - from both sides. There is also often a lack of critical thinking on the side of those struggling against Genetic Engineering. The answer to how we will feed the world's population in the years to come is very complex. There is will be no single simple solution.

We need to begin by looking for solutions in the complex natural systems that have been maintaining life for millions of years on this planet. We need to abandon the idea of dominating nature and recognize that we are part of and dependent on the health and vitality of the planet as a whole. This means, among other things, maintaining genetic diversity, sustaining natural systems, and focusing on small scale local agriculture whenever possible.

Here on Hawaii Island we are struggling, against some very powerful forces, to create a sustainable agricultural environment. It is people power against big money and corporate power. So far the people are holding there own.

Do you think this kind of ignorance is what has muddied the debate about genetically modified foods? We have so many people who don't know what these foods are all about. Unfortunately these are the folks who go out to work for the Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. They end up distorting the science behind genetically genetically foods. James in his blog called GMO Africa (http://www.gmoafrica.org/) tackles this issue as much. You have your job cut out.

Paul
Actually, bio-fuel is doing exactly what it was intended to do. Drive up the price of food and starve millions. Eugenics.
The global warming scare is nothing more than a vehicle to get what the elites and the UN want. Massive population reduction and control of resources.
In the meantime the poor sheep watch the TV and think they can do something to "SAVE" the world.
The world is fine, other than the fact it is controlled by inbred psychopaths.
Read Agenda 21, can be found on my blog
www.windfarms.wordpress.com
I started out fighting wind farms, another scam and over the last year and a half have discovered the true meaning of Sustainability. It has nothing to do with the environment, as presented to the public.
Hitler would be proud.
The sisters of Prince Philip, founder of WWF ( world wildlife fund) were all married to ex SS officers.
We are entering some very interesting times my friend.

Jerry,

It is very good to here that all is well with you and M.G. I am still nostalgic for New Orleans but am enjoying life here in Hawaii.

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years see we saw you.

Your friend, Paul

Paul I heard it was your birthday from your brother Robert. So Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 My wife M.G. and the rest of my family were in New Orleans for Easter break and stopped by the jewelry store. Bought a ring for M.G. it was almost like old times but not quite since you were not there.

Read some of your blog and enjoyed reading what you have been doing with your time. It must be wonderful doing work that is making a difference. And doing it in Hawaii is icing on your birthday cake.

You take care and I am glad to hear that you married the girl who was in law school in 1998 when MG and I bought her ring from you. Your friend jerry

Hi, Paul,
I have been working at the homeless shelter here in Tallahassee. I have found it very striking that the people almost all seem so normal. Clean, attractive, well spoken. No different than a normal cross section of society. Most of us are just a little bit of bad luck (health, financial, brain) from being in the same situation.
